Introduction:
This article is a mere attempt to define the concept of creative writing. So let’s remove any previous notions and look at the meaning as it appears. The phrase” Creative Writing” consists of the subjective word “creative”. Different people will look at creativity differently. What is creative to me might be “ordinary” to others and so on. So, in my perspective, creative writing is an original, unique piece that conveys some degree of art. Indeed this definition needs to be further elaborated as the word “art” itself needs to be defined. Nevertheless, this word is less “problematic” than the latter.

One of the best and most effective definitions is the one from “The Creative Writing Coursebook: Forty Authors Share Advice and Exercises for Fiction and Poetry” by Julia Bell and Paul Magrs. The definition goes: “Creative writing is any writing that goes outside the bounds of normal professional, journalistic, academic, or technical forms of literature, typically identified by an emphasis on narrative craft, character development, and the use of literary tropes or with various traditions of poetry and poetics.”
“The first thing that jumps into my mind one I hear the word “creative writing” is “a hook”. Which is the secret ingredient in any creative writing piece. That hook either captivates the mind or evokes the heart.”R. Ali
I also think David Morley in his book “The Cambridge Introduction to Creative Writing“, has set the path for authors who aspire to be successful in this field. The definition says: “Creative writing involves the making of new meanings, the construction of new worlds, and the exploration of new forms of expression. It is a process of discovery, invention, and transformation, where writers harness the power of language to evoke emotions, provoke thought, and engage readers in imaginative experiences.”
This means that a creative writing piece should have this power over the readers. To have this power we need to hook the reader to our imaginary world. If the reader is awake enough and can sense what is going on around them, that means we lost them and we don’t have this power over them.
What Does it Take to be a Creative Writer?
I did thorough research on this topic because I always thought that ‘ I am not good enough or qualified enough” to be a writer, especially in a language that is not my first language. Ironically all the findings had nothing to do with the “excuses” I told myself. I found that to be a creative writer, one needs the following:
1. Read widely, be a dedicated reader. Read for well-known renowned, especially in your field of writing.
2. Practice a lot! Nothing can be more effective than actually starting writing and fighting procrastination. In this context I would like to ask you a question: Do you need a master’s degree in writing when you can master writing by actually writing? I don’t think so.
3. Be open to criticism. Know that there is nothing such as perfection and writing is “an endless process”. You should also be mentally prepared to accept rejection from publishers. Nowadays you can self-publish on platforms such as Amazon KDP and so on, but you need to be very patient with such options.
4. It is important that you become persistent and Disciplined. I know it is very challenging to make time for writing. We all have what keeps us busy or what distracts us during writing. Try to make it a habit to write every day. To help you with that, we develop online tools on this website to help you overcome writer’s block.
5. It is also important to network and join the writer’s community: Building connections with other writers, attending workshops, joining writing groups, and participating in literary events are all part of your journey toward growth.
6. Lastly, It is very important that you believe in yourself and your ability to succeed. Confidence comes after you are convinced that perfection is never reachable and that criticism is part of your journey to grow. Always remember that writing is a selfless act; You write for your readers. So dedicate yourself as much as you can by challenging yourself to complete certain goals and daily tasks. This works better if you have writing groups and friends with whom you can compete.
